House makes history: Committee OKs bill vs dynasties

MANILA - For the first time ever, the House Committee on Suffrage has approved a consolidated bill banning political dynasties in the Philippines.

The bill essentially bans from running in the same election the spouses or persons related to an incumbent up to the second degree of consanguinity or affinity. It also bans the possible overlap of relatives' terms in office.

Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares also inserted a provision that empowers the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to resolve through a raffle which one in the same family will be allowed to run in the same election in case none of the candidates in the same family withdraw or give way to just one family member.

Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora said "the important thing is a lot of reforms have to be set in place and it shouldn’t just be in the budget. It should also include political dynasties. Let’s take a look again. We have been remiss in our obligation to implement [this]. Let’s see what they will do at the committee of suffrage. I hope we get the leadership to agree to looking at pol dynasties in a much more aggressive light.”

Colmenares, who is also one of the authors said: "Today’s a historic moment, if only because for the first time, pumasa sa kumite.”

ACT TEACHERS Party List Rep. Antonio Tinio said, "the next step is for [the lower House] to schedule plenary debates. I call on the public and I hope that the same forces that are for the abolition of the pork barrel system will also be mobilized for this struggle. Alam natin magkaugnay ang issue ng pork barrel at dynasties.”

The bill is expected to be endorsed to the plenary.

Despite all these, it’s a guessing game if this will even be included in the agenda of the plenary, considering some lawmakers are involved in political dynasties.

Speaker Sonny Belmonte's daughter, Joy, is Quezon City vice mayor. He is also an uncle to QC Rep. Kit Belmonte.
Deputy Majority Leader Abigail Binay is the daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay and sister to Senator Nancy Binay.
Rep. Mark Villar is son to Senator Cynthia Villar.

Rep. Lino Cayetano is brother to Senators Pia and Alan Peter Cayetano.

Malabon Rep. Josephine Lacson Noel is sister-in-law to An Waray Rep. Victoria Noel.

Rep. Imelda Marcos is mother to Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos and Senator Bongbong Marcos.

Rep. Lani Mercado is wife to Senator Bong Revilla.

Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian is brother to Rep. Wesley

Gatchalian and Valenzuela Mayor Rex Gatchalian, Rep.

Rep. Gloria Arroyo is the mother of Rep. Dato Arroyo.

Rep. Sitti Hataman is the wife of ARMM Governor Jim Hataman.

Lanao del Norte Rep. Abdullah Dimaporo is married to Rep. Imelda Dimaporo.

Japanese Exports Soar as a Weaker Yen Boosted Sales of Major Exporters.

Japan's exports rose a stronger-than-expected 18.6 percent in October from a year before, notching up the fastest gain in over three years thanks to the weak yen and a pick-up in overseas demand, data on Wednesday showed. The rise compared with an 11.5 percent increase in September and market expectations in a Reuters poll for a 16.5 percent gain.

Why Japanese soldier's son donated P87,000 to PH

MANILA, Philippines - A Japanese man from Fukuoka donated 200,000 yen (around P87,000) to the relief efforts in the Philippines, which was battered by super typhoon "Yolanda" (Haiyan).

Kenji Hirakawa sent a letter to the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo by post. In his letter, he expressed wishes for the quick recovery of the Philippines, and his desire to help in any way he can.

However, Hirakawa's ties to the Philippines run deep.

“My father lies sleeping in a mountain somewhere in Luzon,” he said in the letter, as quoted by the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo.

He said he was just three months old when his father, a member of the Japanese imperial army, left him to serve his country during World War II.

His father was sent to the Philippines and never made it back home. Japan occupied the Philippines from1942 to 1945.

"I am enclosing here 200,000 yen for all the troubles my father may have caused to the Filipino people,” he said.

He expressed hope the money will help in easing the plight of the typhoon victims in central Philippines.

The Philippine embassy was unable to contact Hirakawa, since he did not include a contact number in his letter.

Last week, a Japanese preschooler touched the hearts of many Pinoys, after he donated his piggy bank savings for the victims of typhoon "Yolanda."

Guess who's trapped in Zamboanga? Witnesses vs Napoles WHAT A COINCIDENCE???

MANILA, Philippines - The ongoing firefight between military forces and Moro rebels in Zamboanga City has affected even the quest for justice in the pork barrel scam, as witnesses against Janet Lim-Napoles were among those unable to fly out of Zamboanga airport to Manila.

The witnesses were supposed to jointly swear and affirm before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) their affidavits against the alleged scam on Monday. However, this will no longer push through because some of the witnesses supposedly fying from Zamboanga have been trapped in the firefight in the city.
"Several witnesses are from Zamboanga, but the flights have been cancelled and they can no longer go to the NBI in Manila," lawyer Levito Baligod, counsel for the witnesses, told InterAksyon.com in a phone interview Monday morning.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) on Monday cancelled all its flights in and out of Zamboanga "to ensure the safety of its passengers amid the ongoing security concerns in the city."
The city has shut down following the attack early Monday morning, initially attributed to the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) of Nur Misuari.
In its advisory, PAL said the cancelled PAL Express flights are Manila-Zamboanga-Manila scheduled for tonight and flights bound for Jolo, Davao, and Cebu.
